Chapter 6

Returning from his errands, Duncan paused outside Leslee’s door to remind himself that as much as he wanted to have her, she didn’t belong here. He had to keep his hands and his mouth to himself, because if he touched her again he might not be able to stop himself.

Knocking lightly, his breath caught when she opened the door. She’d let her red curls down and they bounced around her shoulders as her pink lips opened in a welcoming smile. Some man would be lucky to come home to her each evening, but it wouldn’t be him. The thought caused a longing in his chest, so he only nodded at her when he strolled in.

She’d removed her gloves, and he took special notice of her long, slender fingers, the ones that God had granted favor to. He knew many people would call her a witch, but there was something genuine and pure about her. He’d known she was special the first time he’d seen her.

A pitcher of wine in one hand and two cups stacked in the other, he set the items on the floor near the fireplace and turned back to watch her shut the door. “Latch it. Ye really should keep it latched all the time, especially with so many people about.”

“Aye. I’ve learned my lesson.”

He nodded then yanked a blanket from the bed and folded it in front of the dancing flames as well. Next, he removed his boots and placed them next to her slippers.

“Sit.” He motioned to the pallet he’d made.

Thankfully, she smiled and didn’t object. He wanted to watch her in the firelight, enjoy her company for the last little bit of time they had together. Sitting by the fire was comfortable and safer than near the bed.

Taking a seat on the floor next to her, a sense of peace washed over him. “I was hoping ye would do something for me.” He held up a box he’d picked up when he went back to his quarters.

Curious green eyes sparkled in the light. “What is it?”

“Some things that belonged to my family.”

“Ye are certain ye dinnae think I’m mad?”

“Nae, I think ye are a miracle.”

“But ye couldnae leave fast enough when…”

“It wasnae ye. Och, I didnae want ye to think that. It’s just that I’ve tried to push the memories of my family away for years. When I was sent to school, I had nothing to cling to but being the best at everything. I couldnae let their memories haunt me.”

His heart hurt at the admission. He’d not even realized he’d tried to forget them, and now he knew it was why he had sought out Henry. He wanted that connection to family. He missed it.

“I had to be by myself to deal with the memories. I had pushed it all away and it came crashing back when ye reminded me.”

Leslee closed her eyes and when she opened them he could swear there was a sheen of moisture in them. But it wasn’t sadness—he couldn’t place it.
